I am very prone to tearing whenever I handle onions and shallots. Let me tell ya - I FRIGGIN HATE IT!
I had the most embarrassing moment of my life once cutting onions. One day, I was over at J’s and he suggested perhaps I should make him dinner. Well, I was gonna impress J, a guy I was casually dating while studying in the US, with my kitchen skills, until he suddenly asked me, “Daphne, why are you crying?” Dang! I didn’t realize I was actually tearing, kept wiping off my tears with the sleeves. Then he said, let me take over. So, he took the knife and kept it under running water for a while, then begun cutting. WOW! He didn’t tear at all! He told me, to save myself from embarrassment, by having mascara smeared all over my face, it’s best to cut onions and shallots with a wet knife! AND … it really did magic for me!
Try to prepare the onions or shallots earlier if you don’t want oil splattering all over the place! ![]()
