Lucky fellas … Polar Puffs and Cakes - a Singapore food chain - is in town … KLites can now order customized birthday cakes, wedding cakes, anniversary cakes … cakes for just any occasions! They are well-known for their curry puffs, chicken pies and Sugar Rolls.

A little about their history:

The Founder of Polar Cafe, Mr Chan Hinky, arrived in Singapore in the 1920s from Hong Kong with only 90 cents in his pocket. Like the many industrious migrants who came to seek a new life, he worked hard and saved money to fulfill his dream of opening a cafe. This dream was to become a reality – the famous Polar Cafe at 51 High Street, well known to today for its Polar Puffs.

The war years
Before World War II, Polar Cafe was a favourite haunt for wealthy merchants and the expatriate community, especially on weekends. During the Japanese Occupation, it was one of the few places that continued business, It drew people from all walks of life who came for its curry puffs, ice-creams and refreshments.

The 1950s to 1970s
With the Parliament House and the Supreme Court only a stone’s throw away, Polar Cafe became a convenient lunch and tea-time rendezvous. It was not unusual to spot distinguished lawyers, judges and Members of Parliament within the premises. The post-war years saw the district flourish as the leading shopping and commercial hub in Singapore. Polar Cafe enjoyed brisk business.

The 1980s to the 90s
In 1986 the government acquired 51 High Street to make way for a new Parliament House. This paved the way for expansion with Polar’s first takeaway outlet at Raffles Place and larger production facilities at Leng Kee Road. We have since added more outlets in various localities in Singapore. In 1998 we move our production facilities to the current site in Woodlands.

The original Cafe was revived when we opened a sit-in cafe at Suntec City Mall. This cafe offers a wide selection of our famous pastries, puffs, cakes, sandwiches, beverages and an appetizing range of finger foods. For busy lunch and shopping crowds, we also provide affordably-priced set-lunches as well as tea-time specials.

An intro excerpt ripped from The Star Online:

Malaysian customers can select their favourite Doraemon or Tom & Jerry design printed on edible icing sugar sheet or hand-drawn on cakes with piping jelly while Sesame Street characters would be available from January next year.

Store in The Pavilion (on the grounds of ex-BBGS)

Segambut MP Datuk Dr Tan Kee Kwong - (I know this guy - a family friend - son of the founder of Sentosa Hospital in Jalan Pahang, Tan Chee Khoon) officially opened the first Polar Puffs & Cakes outlet in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.

Some of their cakes:

Check our their puffs, character cakes (oh! I wish I am in KL so that I can order Thomas & friends for my boy), festive cakes and other specialty cakes. The prices are rather reasonable - for a high-end bakery. Yummmmm … I miss cakes in Malaysia and Hong Kong. Can never find any of those here - of course, unless I bake myself *lol*

So if you’re in town - don’t forget to visit Polar Puffs & Cakes!

Note: This is NOT an advertorial. It’s particularly a shop I love!
